Elusive Truths

Elusive Truths is an arrival in time, an intersection of questions, and an invitation towards radical honesty that aims to bridge the space between David Norsworthy, Monèt Noelle Marshall and those who come to witness. Situated in the realms of dance and theatre, the event revels in the nuance of ever-changing aliveness and the complexity of constantly shifting realities. It plays in the ambiguity of paradox and, sometimes, delights in the levity of dishonesty. How can we dis-entangle ourselves from forces that distort truth? How can we tune our bodies to the frequencies of our deeply embodied, ancestral, intuitive truths? Live musical/sound offerings by Omar David Rivero, also known as Driftnote, will add un-languageable truths to the space between all of us, and performance interventions by Mairi Greig or María Isabel Salgado will occasionally disrupt our echo chambers as the event unfolds.

The performance is interactive and participatory.

Audience members are welcome to opt-in to the extent of their curiosity and delight.

Free ticket reservations will commence on Tuesday November 3rd, 2021.

Due to Covid-19 precautions, we will be organizing seating in bubbles of 2-5 people. PLEASE RESERVE YOUR TICKET WITH THE FOLKS YOU’D LIKE TO SIT WITH. To help maximize the number of people who can attend this event with extremely limited capacity, we are not pre-reserving bubbles of 1 – so please plan to come with at least 1 other person. IF YOU BOOK TICKETS AND CANNOT ATTEND, PLEASE CANCEL YOUR RESERVATION.

Limited walk-up tickets, including single ticket bubbles, will be available at the door. Registration will be mandatory for contact tracing purposes.

All audience members will need to show proof of Covid-19 Vaccination at the sign-in/box office desk when they arrive. Additionally, all audience members will be required to wear a mask/face covering for the entire duration of the event. Audience bubbles may be distanced by less than 2 metres.

Performers will be tested for Covid-19 up to 3 times/week and will perform unmasked.

Event duration is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes, including a brief post-show discussion.

David Norsworthy is a Toronto-based dance artist who is “an exceptionally lucid performer, impressive and articulate” (The Globe and Mail). David has presented choreographic works at CanAsian KickStart (Toronto), Dixon Place (New York), Our Voices (Stockholm), OnSite/InSight (Winston Salem) and Kinetic Studio (Halifax) among other festivals and series. His recent choreographic project “Possibilities of Dialogue”, was co-produced by North York Arts with funding from the Toronto Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts.  Commissions have included Lamondance (Vancouver), Point Park University (Pittsburgh) and Hubbard Street Dance Chicago’s HSPro (Chicago). David has performed and toured with Peggy Baker Dance Projects (Toronto), Toronto Dance Theatre (Toronto), Dancenorth (Melbourne), ZviDance (New York), Brian Brooks (New York), Skånes Dansteater (Malmö) and Helena Franzén (Stockholm). Recent performances include the national tour of “who we are in the dark” by Peggy Baker with live music by Sarah Neufeld/Jeremy Gara of Arcade Fire, and the Merce Cunningham Centennial “Night of 100 Solos” at Brooklyn Academy of Music in NYC. A graduate of The Juilliard School (New York), David is the grateful recipient of the Living Arts Centre’s 2016 Ron Lenyk Award and was one of three finalists for the Toronto Arts Foundation’s 2018 Emerging Artist Award. Monèt Noelle Marshall is a director, playwright, actor, curator, cultural organizer, producer, filmmaker and consultant. She defines her artistic practice as “rehearsal for the relationship”. She centers Black women and Black queer folks in her work while creating access points for all people. She is the founding Artistic Director of MOJOAA Performing Arts Company, a Black theater company in Raleigh, NC that centers Black playwrights of the South. Her work has been experienced in St. Ann’s Warehouse, Cape Fear Regional Theatre, Nuyorican Poets Cafe, Open Eye Figure Theatre, Northstar Church of the Arts, Manbites Dog Theatre and Mordecai Historic Park. Most recently she has collaborated with African American Policy Forum on Gucci’s Chime for Change zine, Scalawag Magazine, NC Museum of Art, Historic Stagville, City of Raleigh, Columbia University and Hayti Heritage Center.
