LORNA BAUER | WHAT IS NOT BUT COULD BE IF

What Is Not But Could Be If, an exhibition of all-new work by Montreal-based LORNA BAUER, embeds layers of fragmentation, deconstruction and reconstruction in a series of photographs, sculpture and video. Broken glass, rebuilt porcelain, and multiple exposure photographs of mirrors (among other things), produce a textured materiality that Bauer captures, collages and displays in an installation that questions fragility, and abstractly narrates the linearity of time.

LORNA BAUER works primarily in photography, video, and installation. She received a Masters degree from the University of Toronto in 2009 and a Bachelor of Fine Arts (with distinction) from Concordia University in 2005. She has taken part in numerous group exhibitions and has recently presented her work as solo exhibitions at Gallery Les Territoires in Montreal and in the projection access space at the Art Gallery of Mississauga. Bauer lives and works in Montreal.

Everything Next to Each Other presents work engaged in an exploration of common space, as the foundational relationship between individuals and their surroundings. The concept of public space often refers to a shared place such as a library or a subway, but it can also refer to a conversation or an encounter with a book or picture. Such spaces can thus be impersonal and overwhelming, as much as they can be subtle and intimate, perhaps even dangerously intimate. It is up to the individual to negotiate their level of engagement, yet how does one establish a relationship with something dynamic, something indefinite? After all, such a space never fully reveals itself; one must consistently reconfigure and revise ones relationship to it.

SARAH JANE GORLITZ & WOJCIECH OLEJNIK‘s collaborative work has been presented in solo exhibitions at Eyelevel Gallery (Halifax), Struts Gallery (Sackville), Neutral Ground (Regina), Optica, Centre DArt Contemporain (Montreal), and Kapitalisitischer Realismus (Berlin), and in recent group exhibitions at The Soap Factory (Minneapolis), 6 Picoles Cycliques (Lyon), Kunstverein INGAN (Berlin), and Truck (Calgary). They have received funding from the Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Arts Council and in 2008 were awarded the Joseph S. Stauffer prize for emerging artists.
